SMART HARD DISK FAILURE MEANS HARD DRIVE NEEDS REPLACING

A customer recently brought in this HP 255 G2 hard drive replacement Laptop that would not load into windows and made mention of a smart warning message that came up.

S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology; often written as SMART) is a monitoring system included in computer hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs) that detects and reports on various indicators of drive reliability, with the intent of enabling the anticipation of hardware failures.

When S.M.A.R.T. data indicates a possible imminent drive failure, software running on the host system may notify the user so stored data can be copied to another storage device, preventing data loss, and the failing drive can be replaced.

The SMART warning was that the hard drive will fail imminently and it will need backing up. The Laptop would not boot into Windows.

The drive was making a scraping noise when the machine was first turned on meaning that one of the heads was crashing against a platter confirming that the laptop needed a hard drive replacement.

HOW TO REPLACE A HP 255 G2 LAPTOP HARD DRIVE

The video above goes through the steps taken to replace the hard drive in this HP Laptop. All of the screws need taking out of the bottom, the memory cover needs removing as there are another 3 screws hidden underneath it and unusually this is where the Keyboard, Trackpad and Power switched are to be disconnected before removing the top lid. Once all screws are removed and the necessary cables unplugged then you can use a prise tool to unclip around the top cover taking your time not to snap any of the clips. The whole top lid including the keyboard and trackpad then lifts clear from the base of the laptop. 3 more screws hold the hard drive in its caddy in place and you then need to remove the drive from the caddy before reversing these steps to put it back together.

STEPS TO TAKE POST HARD DRIVE REPLACEMENT

Once the drive is replaced and you switch it on, you will receive a message from the machines BIOS stating that “Boot device is not found, Please install an operating system”

This machine was running Windows 10, we have the installation media on a bootable pen drive, plugged it in and rebooted the machine so that it booted from the pen drive into the windows 10 setup procedure and re-installed Windows for the customer.
