Laptop screen is blank

If the screen on your laptop has gone blank and it does not display even a faint image, try adjusting the brightness and the contrast first of all. If this doesn’t solve the problem then try plugging the laptop into a monitor to see if you get a display and to rule out a graphics card fault. (You may need to press down function FN and the f4 button to switch to the monitor output)

If you get a display on the TV but nothing on the laptop screen then something has failed on the screen and it needs a laptop screen replacement

laptop screen that only displays half the image

Half of the laptop screen is dead

If your laptop is displaying something similar to the image on the Right then it is one of two things causing the problem.

Either a fault has developed on the actual display panel itself in which case it will need replacing starting from £65 fitted depending on make and model or alternatively the ribbon cable that connects the screen to the motherboard is at fault, it may need replacing or it might if you are lucky just be a loose connection.

In either case, we would need to look at your machine and diagnose which fault is causing your particular problem.

Lines running down screen

Thin vertical lines running down your screen can be the sign of a number of problems.

The first is that the LCD itself has become faulty and will need to be replaced. The cost of this starts from just £65 fitted depending on the make and model.

The second is that the cable that goes between the motherboard and the back of the screen has developed a fault. Majority of these cables run through the Left-hand hinge and can wear over time. Replacement cables fitted start from £35 again dependent on make and model.

The final fault is based normally around the NVidia graphics chipset where over time the solder that holds the chip on and connects it to the motherboard becomes stressed and cracked giving an intermittent connection and will eventually fail. This can sometimes be repaired by reflowing the area around the graphics chip however it can also mean that the machine is beyond economical repair.

There is no real way of detecting which fault your laptop has developed without having a look at it.
